INPEX Group's Approach to AI

The INPEX Group's mission is to ensure a stable supply of energy while contributing steadily to the decarbonization of society. In our long-term strategy, we position the full utilization of digital technologies and AI, underpinned by robust information security, as a key pillar of strengthening our business foundation and enhancing productivity.

The principles set forth in our Sustainability Charter—ensuring the health and safety of all individuals involved in our operations and maintaining strict operational safety, as well as complying with laws and acting with integrity in accordance with international norms and local standards—remain equally fundamental in our use of AI.

AI is a vital technology that has the potential to enhance decision-making across exploration, development, and production, improve operational safety and efficiency, and support the transition to a low-carbon society. At the same time, improper use of AI may give rise to risks including infringement of rights, erroneous judgments, and information leakage. This document sets forth the basic approach of the INPEX Group to the development, deployment, and use of AI.

The approach set forth in this document is intended as a reference for all officers and employees of the INPEX Group (including contract staff and temporary personnel) when developing, deploying, or using AI in the course of their duties.

We use AI as a means to support human decision-making in pursuit of stable energy supply and a sustainable society. Employees and officers bear ultimate responsibility for AI-generated outputs and for decision-making. In all settings—including operational environments—AI operates under appropriate human oversight and control.

Safety is our most important value. We prioritize the life, health, and safety of our employees and all individuals involved in our operations. We are committed to ensuring the reliability and robustness of our AI systems, and we aim to ensure that safety is maintained even under abnormal or unforeseen conditions.

We comply with all laws and regulations in the countries and regions where we operate, including those that relate to AI. We refrain from using AI in ways that may infringe upon individual rights or dignity. We respect intellectual property rights and take appropriate measures to avoid violating the rights of third parties.

We strive to prevent unfair discrimination or bias in AI usage based on race, gender, nationality, age, or other attributes. We monitor AI outputs for potential bias and work toward addressing any issues identified.

We endeavor to provide appropriate disclosure to our stakeholders regarding the use of AI. We endeavor to maintain the traceability and explainability of AI decision-making processes to a technically reasonable extent.

We handle personal and confidential information in strict compliance with our internal policies and applicable data protection laws. We are committed to safeguarding our AI systems against cyber threats and other security risks.

We work to provide ongoing education and training to enable all employees to use AI safely and effectively. We foster a culture of responsible AI use and promote awareness of ethical considerations across the organization.

Through the proactive use of AI, we drive technological innovation in the energy sector—contributing to improved operational efficiency, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, and the discovery of new energy resources.

To ensure the effectiveness of the approach set forth in this document, we work on continuous monitoring and improvement under the digital strategy promotion structure, in collaboration with relevant departments.

We review this document as needed, taking into account developments in AI technology, changes in laws and regulations, the evolution of international discourse, and societal expectations.
